Who & Why

Hello there!

Welcome to the Materialistic blog, Colour-tastic.

For those of you who dont know me (which will be most of you!!!) I am Angie and I run a hand screen printed homewares business in Sydney, Australia called Materialistic.

With the designs I create for Materialistic, I try to find the humour and beauty in the everyday. My designs are always bright and colour soaked sooo can you guess what my blog is going to be about? Yep, thats right - colour. Whooo!

Mood-altering, polarising, arresting colour. Colour in all its shades and how it appears not just in textiles and graphics but everywhere - ceramics, illustration, fashion, art, flora and how that colour inspires us.

I once read American screenprint Rausenburger, would be inspired for the day by choosing a colour over breakfast (lets say yellow) and then on his walk to his studio he would collect (physically and visually) all the yellow objects and things he saw along the way, be it a discarded bus tickets, hot dog wrapper, neon signage, a ladies summer coat, etc. Then once at his studio all those elements would be incorporated into his printed collage that day.

Cool or what? You try it sometime (the visual collection, that is) its really eye opening and quite fun.

I digress, my background is in graphics but like soooo many other graphic designers out there, I dived into screen printing as a balm to  years in the corporate box. During those years I was lucky enough to work with some AMAZING people: designers, photographers, artists, illustrators who were really inspiring and awe-spiring (if thats a word, ok so its not but go with it). So along the way I have collected images galore that I thought I would share.

This blog really is a space for inspiration, for thought starters and an attempt to look at colours a little differently. We all tend to get stuck in colour ruts - I know I am guilty of it (how many pairs of hot pink shoes does one girl need? really?) and who out there doesnt have the same coloured top just in varying degrees of shade...  The blog also has the added bonus of showcasing all the amazing creative types out there who have designed or created lovely stuff we just wish we had done ourselves!!

Anyway, enough preamble, go and get inspired.

Angie x
