Illustrator of the Week
oo, just stumbled across French illustrator Maureen Valfort and am a huge fan.
Her lively offbeat style reminds me of what would be a modern day love child of Paul Rand and Maurice Sendak. Maureen's use of bright clashing colour is delivered in a quirky, unique style that gives her illustration a timeless feel.
Maureen hails from France "where she spent her early life on a farm in the countryside. She studied graphic design at l'Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and some years later at The Royal College of Art. She now specialised in the design of books, catalogues, identities and exhibition pieces and lives in London."
All images from Maureen Valfort where you will also find more of her great work.

Awesome rabbit from a childrens book Maureen is currently designing.

Love these designs for jewellery store, Odium, featuring illustrations of birds made from jewels.

Plus this fab wallpaper for a German wool store.

Enjoy!

Follow Me
I was totally coveting the goodies and decor in new Follow Store in Surry Hills even before they became a stockists of Materialistic goodies.
Opened by the ever creative duo Brooke Johnston (jewellery designer) and Sarah Thornton (fashion designer) of the Finders Keepers market fame. The Follow store is housed in wonderful heritage shop - replete with drawers aplenty and marvellous old script typograhy still in place.
Brooke and Sarah's eye for great design is evident here as this teasure trove is stocked full of a fabulous array of well chosen and well crafted loveliness. My favs include ceramics from Made590, homewares from Elkhorn, and vintage fabric cluth pruses from Kitty Came Home.
Enjoy! x

Tote bag book

Small bit of trivia you don't know about me - I lurve books. Especially art books, they smell so good, fresh off the printing press, all new and full of inspiration be it visual or written word. Best place for me is stretched out in the sun with a good book. Heaven.
Ahh but I digress, this entry is actually about a fab new design book that has just landed in bookstores called The Tote Bag Book. (Can you guess what it's about?) Not only is it full of great designs and inspiration, it features work by Materialistic.
The book published by Lawrence King was pitched, researched and designed by Jitesh Patel, a London based illustrator and designer.
"The tote bag is an eco product for this century, destined to replace disposable plastic bags. The canvas bag has become increasingly popular in recent years, as more people have become environmentally conscious, concerned about climate change and aware of the impact of their carbon footprint. The media reminds us all to be more conscious of the world we live in, and environmental issues are inescapable. The tote bag artworks that are most striking, inventive, ironic and original have formed the basis of this book. I have received many positive and encouraging responses from designers while researching the topic; most have commented that it was a great subject for a book. I hope the readers of this book will share our enthusiasm."
The Tote Bag Book is available from Arial bookshop on Oxford Street and of course, online bookshops... Go on you, you know you want one!
Enjoy!

PS. And thanks to the luck of alphabetical placement, I, Angie McCarthy, get to rub shoulders with design guru Angus Hyland (!!) OK, so not physical shoulders as I've never met him but we do share the same page in print.
