PINK: The colour of peace

Some images from the Monday Morning project in India, Kenya and Japan.

As 10,000 hot pink balloons were handed out across Kabul, Yazmany Arboleda was hoping to create a “a living sculpture” that “brought about joy, wonderment and a new sense of awareness to people”.

The sculpture was part of collaboration between The Glassless Glasses Studio’ Yazmany Arboleda and We Believe in Balloons Project. Both the studio and the project are doing amazing things. Granted they are solving cancer or ending world hunger but their social awareness, commentary and desire to bring wonder, delight and emotional support to people struggling through disaster, dictatorships or war is quite inspiration and thought provoking.

Hmm, goodness me, what started out as delight in colour soaked photography ended up with a lost few hours as I explored the work of these artists.

The Glassless Glasses Studio is an art activation collaborative based in New York. Founded in 2008 by Yazmany Arboleda, the studio takes a critical view of social, political and moral issues in a culture ever more driven by the media. (“The inspiration for the studio’s name comes from the idea that the information, visual or otherwise, that we are presented with through modern media is essentially distorted. In contrast, glassless glasses provide a frame for our surrounding landscape without correcting one’s own natural vision.”)

We Believe in Balloons Project
Each balloon handed out by volunteers in the chosen cities contains a note of hope and encouragement for the local population. Previous balloons sculptures have been created in Bangalore, India, Nairobi, Kenya, and Yamaguchi, Japan. The balloons were paid for by supporters around the globe, who were able to buy a balloon for a dollar and write the note inside each one.

New year, new books

I dont know about anyone else but my launch into 2013 was a little, um, shall we say a lethagic stagger rather than a jazz hands disco cartwheel. Getting over the huge year that was 2012, I guess. So, here it is February already (!) and in a (successful) attempt to turbo charge my entry into creativity, I purchased some books. Books by people who I have always thought terrible clever and talented.

The first, a bit of fun for my little one and I, plus doesn't hurt its beautifully illustrated.

'Lets Make some Great Fingerprint Art' by Marion Deuchars.

Marion is a well known illustrator working in London. Where she has worked on loads of fab projects, well, maybe projects made fab by her inclusion. She's won D&AD awards, worked with Frost, Pentagram and Hat-Trick to name a few of her fans.

The book 'Lets Make some Great Fingerprint Art' (and website 'Let's Make Some Great Art') is a collobartion with publishers Laurence King Publishing "as part of an ongoing desire to encourage creativity, art and design, to as wide an audience as possible." Fab, just what I was looking for! You can visit the website here and have a squiz, they also have some entertaining online activities too.

The next book is from local design craft queen, Beci Orpin, 'Find and Keep'.

Next book up is 'Pulled: A catalogue of screen printing' by Mike Perry.

From New York illustrator and author, Mike Perry, this is a wonderful collection of contemporary screen printers and how they are harnessing the medium, each in their own innvoative way.

I have included this spread just because I love the photo of the squeegie - wood-handed ink-splattered loveliness... reminds me of my favourite squeegie that meet a sad end recently... a story for another time... onto the last book...

'Lotta Prints' by Lotta Jansetter

Lotta is a well known Scandinavian printer living in the Big Apple.

In this great reference book - she shows us how to print with anything on anything! A great back to basics inspiration. TIme to get messy methinks.

Christmas crush

Craft Victoria is not helping me stay focussed on my work this week.

Their stunning Christmas catalogue beautifully styled and photographed by Eve Wilson and Paige Anderson, is a treasure trove of colour and craft-tastic loveliness. Hours lost following the catalogue's interactive links... oh dear! So many ideas for wonderful presents that you will not want to give away come Dec 25.

My favs are the fluttering spectrum feather garland by Made by Mosey, the big bright disk of handpainted colour on earrings by Lucy Hearn (of Peaches and Keen) and the eloquently named vase Surf Spray Vessel by Stempel.
